Clearing the Memory Bank

The incredible thing about the breath is that it’s always in the present moment. It doesn’t go anywhere. It doesn’t get stuck like the mind does. Do you see the amazing truth that’s hiding here? We can actually use the breath to get the mind out of where it’s stuck, to guide it out of the past and future and anchor it back in the now.

Imagine your breath as the string of a kite. The kite flying in the breeze is your mind, and the person on the ground holding the string is your body. All three parts—mind, body, and breath—are interconnected and dependent on one another. Together, they form a single unit. As the string of the kite, the breath is the link between the mind and the body, the bridge between our external and internal worlds. When the winds kick up and the kite starts flying off into the past and future, how do you steady it? You play with the string! Talking to the kite and yelling “Come back here!” when it’s flapping all over the place isn’t going to work. Instead, you have to adjust the string. You give it more more slack or tighten it up, you add tension to the string, or you jerk it in a certain direction until it hits that sweet spot where it perfectly catches the wind.

If you’ve ever flown a kite, you know that when the kite is completely centered, the string actually feels like an iron rod. It’s no longer loosey-goosey—it’s very solid, and the kite is steady and centered. It doesn’t move. Even if you let go, it still stays there. This is like the mind in the present moment: solid, powerful, unwavering, anchored in the flow of life. So we play with the string to bring that kite back into the steady flow of the present, and once it’s there, the mind operates from a place of calm focus, and this in turn impacts the breath. When the mind is in flow, our breath is as strong as the iron-rod string of the kite.

The breath travels not only on the surface level of the mind but also in the deepest recesses of the mind. It moves through the whole of the iceberg and into the depths of the memory bank, where it can gather and release old toxins—the old thoughts and emotions we don’t need to hang on to anymore. The system has to have some life force to go in and release. It’s as if you’re opening the lid and letting the steam out. When you first start working with the breath, you might notice that a lot of thoughts and emotions are coming to the surface. Bear with it. It’s just a sign of mental detox. Let the thoughts surge up or around; don’t fight them. If your mind is racing or you’re having worse mood swings than a pregnant woman, just invite it in. When we work with the breath, we begin to clear out the memory bank and the emotions that are stored there.
